Responsibilities

A floater position in a hair salon is a versatile role that requires the employee to be flexible and assist with various tasks wherever they are most needed. A salon floater is cross-trained in different areas and fills in for other employees who may be absent or require help during peak business hours.

Key duties and responsibilities

Client services

  • Customer reception: A floater may be responsible for greeting clients warmly upon their arrival, offering beverages, and ensuring they are comfortable.
  • Pre-service preparation: This includes shampooing and conditioning clients' hair and preparing them for their service with a stylist.
  • Appointment support: Float roles often include administrative tasks like answering phones, scheduling appointments, and managing the booking system.

Stylist assistance

  • Station setup and cleanup: Keeping stylist stations clean, stocked, and ready for the next client is a core responsibility. This includes sweeping up hair and wiping down surfaces.
  • Treatment preparation: Float assistants often help with tasks like mixing hair colors and preparing treatment products for stylists.
  • General support: They assist stylists with miscellaneous tasks as needed, such as retrieving tools, products, or other supplies.

Salon maintenance

  • Cleaning and sanitation: A floater helps with general salon cleanliness, including sweeping floors, cleaning sinks, and sanitizing equipment like scissors and clippers.
  • Laundry: Washing, drying, and folding towels and capes are often part of the job.
  • Inventory management: Responsibilities may include stocking retail shelves, ensuring towels and capes are readily available, and assisting with overall inventory.

Qualifications and necessary skills

To succeed as a salon floater, a person needs to be a quick learner with a strong desire to master a range of skills. Important qualifications include:

Qualifications
